Comparison

I think that the comparisons Krakauer makes to other young adventurers helped him in this story. Some people might still not agree with Chris's decisions and I believe this helped readers understand that Chris wasn't crazy. An example of this would be a statement written about Ruess,"Ruess would spend the remainder of his meteoric life on the move, living out of a backpack on very little money, sleeping in the dirt, cheerfully going hungry for days at a time. " This quote helps us understand that even though people believe they're crazy they love/enjoy what they're doing. "Cheerfully going hungry" most people would be frustrated and irritated by the fact that they're starving, but these fellows enjoyed every aspect of their adventure. Therefor these comparisons helped Krakauer in the development of Chris. All of these men followed their heart. They didn't just stay home and conform to society.

  1. I do have to admit that even though I think Chris is an idiot for doing what he did seeing that other people had similar thoughts to his made me think Chris had more credibility. So yes I do think that using the examples that you did it helped Krakauer’s story. I didn’t see McCandless as that big of an idiot while reading those passages. Yes they did follow their hearts which is an admiral thing but still I think it is weird that someone would want to endure physical pain like starvation. I would also say that i am one of those people who are frustrated by the fact that these men would willingly go and hurt themselves and go as far as killing themselves.
