"In your opinion, what do you think is the most effective (pathos, logos, or ethos) when writing a paper? In your "Into the Wild" and "American Literature" essays did you focus more on one rhetoric, or did you balance all three? If so why?"

I believe that logos is the most important in writing a paper. The reason for this is you can use certain words in order to manipulate the readers in thinking the way you want them to think. After that, pathos would probably be the next important one. This is because once you have provided the reader with certain facts so they think the way you want them to think you have to get involved emotionally. Lastly, comes ethos. The reason for this is you have to be able to support your examples. It's like a relationship. First you have to get the person to like the way you are, such as friendly or nice (logos), then you have to get them involved emotionally (pathos). You want that person to trust you and know that what you're saying is the truth, which is where ethos comes along. If you don't have the logos you can't possibly get the other two to work effectively. I think that for both of those essays I focused more on the ethos, because I had no idea how to balance all of them. Now that I know what makes each of them different yet equal and necessary to the essay I will try to even them in future essays and reviews.

  1. I do think that logos is an extremely important part in your essay. And I also agree with your ordering on the other two. I honestly couldn’t pick which one I thought was the most important but I agree with what you said. I think your blog helped me understand ethos, pathos, and logos better because for me I still get them mixed up at times. So thank you for that. But over all I definitely agree with what you are saying.
